Kaohsiung is the second most populous city in Taiwan after New Taipei and is located in the southwestcorner of the island. Known as the Harbor Capital, Kaohsiung has the largest port in Taiwan and is the world’s sixth largest cargo-container seaport. The tropical climate is comparatively milder and drier than northern Taiwan and makes it a great travel destination any time of the year. Good public transportation system and cheap taxis mean you can easily get around. Owing to the fact that it was a planned city, Kaohsiung has wide orderly streets unlike its bigger sister Taipei.
Although, due to a lack of extensive subways there are more scooters on the roads than any other area of Taiwan. Maolin district is one of its least populated areas and home to the Rukai aboriginal tribe. This area is filled with outdoor activities and only an hour outside the downtown making it a welcome retreat from the city. The Love river has been transformed into a walker/ bikers haven. Extensive bike and walking paths line the river throughout the city. The 85 Skytower hovers above all other buildings in the area and is easily seen from the harbor. Interesting architecture is popping up all over the city and can be enjoyed as you cruise around.
